What this paper is about
Reinforced concrete is a key structural material for the construction industry. The paper will teach students methods for designing reinforced concrete elements and structures to meet New Zealand Standards

How this paper will be taught
This paper is taught through lectures, workshops and laboratory classes.
Lectures: Three 1 - hour lectures per week. These will be recorded on Panopto and be available after the live session.
Workshops: One 2 - hour session per week (divided in two streams) on Mondays (9AM to 11AM and 12PM to 2PM). Students should sign up to one workshop session. The work is individual so no groups will be assigned however students are encouraged to work in groups. These sessions are not recorded, attendance is strongly recommended.
Tutorials: One 1 - hour tutorial per week (divided into two streams). These will be Q&A sessions to provide additional support for the assignments.
Laboratories: Students will be placed in groups of four or five and must attend one 3 - hour laboratory. N.B. The day following the lab session students will need to return to the lab to remove specimens from moulds and complete any remaining clean up of the lab space.
Important Note for International Students: For international students in New Zealand under student visas, regular attendance is part of your visa obligation and is checked as a requirement on the University under the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students, to which the University is a signatory. Academic staff are formally required to monitor attendance in classes and submission of compulsory assessment events/ items and to report to Waikato International in the event that any problem with irregular attendance or non-submission is not resolved.

Assessments
How you will be assessed
Students are assessed based on a series of assignments linked to a reinforced concrete structure. Each assignment will enable students to design individual reinforced concrete elements which together form the final structure. Assignment submissions will assess students ability to analyse loading, apply the appropriate design theory and present results in a concise written report supported by engineering drawings.
Workshops will be used to develop material for the assignments. Students are encouraged to work in groups during the workshop sessions however each student will be given separate design parameters and must make their own individual submissions
The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 100:0. There is no final exam.
